When research meets clinical practice: MLS® laser therapy in the treatment of myofascial pain from bruxism

22 October 2025 - Research

Myofascial pain in the masticatory muscles is a complex and widespread condition, often linked to bruxism, stress and chronic muscle hyperactivity.
A recent publication from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) demonstrated how an integrated and conservative approach, supported by MLS® Laser Therapy, can offer highly effective clinical results.

A clinical case that demonstrates concrete results

The research reports the case of a 21-year-old woman with chronic pain in her cheek and temple, with limited jaw movement and severe symptoms (8/10 on the NRS scale).
After ten months of treatment based on conservative strategies—patient education, self-care strategies, a bite, and MLS® Laser Therapy—the patient reported:

  • Pain reduction from 8/10 to 1/10
  • Disappearance of joint noises (jaw clicking)
  • Improvement of oral opening up to 45 mm
  • Restoration of correct occlusion and reduction of muscle tension

A result that highlights how the synergy between the clinical approach and advanced technologies can radically change the prognosis of myofascial pain.

Light that promotes recovery

MLS® Laser Therapy uses the power of light to stimulate cellular regenerative processes and reduce inflammation naturally.
Its main therapeutic actions include:

  • Anti-inflammatory effect: reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and local pain
  • Analgesic effect: modulation of nerve pain transmission
  • Myorelaxant effect: relaxation of contracted muscles and reduction of stiffness
  • Biostimulant effect: acceleration of cellular metabolism and tissue repair

In the clinical case analysed, laser application to the masseter muscles allowed breaking the pain-muscle contraction-inflammation cycle, restoring optimal jaw function to the patient.

Conclusion

Research once again confirms the ASA mission: to combine technological innovation and scientific validation to offer safe, effective, and evidence-based Therapeutic Solutions.
