ASAcampus: effect of MLS® treatment on myoblasts

18 December 2012 - Research -

The scientific journal "Microgravity Science and Technology" publishes research "Effect of IR Laser on Myoblasts: Prospects of Application for counteracting Microgravity-Induced Muscle Atrophy" realized by the team consisting of Dr. Monica Monici (ASAcampus Head), Dr. Francesca Cialdai, Dr. John Romano, Dr. Paola Antonia Corset, Dr. Angela Maria Rizzo, Dr. Anna Caselli and Dr. Francesco Rinaldi. Carried out in the Laboratory jointly ASAcampus (ASA - Department of Clinical Physiopathology, University of Florence), in the Department of Pharmacological Sciences and Biomolecular University of Milan and in the Department of Biochemical Sciences, University of Florence, the research was designed to obtain information about the possible benefits of implementing an advanced infrared laser to counter deficit of energy metabolism of muscle cells caused by no-load and stimulate tissue recovery hypotrophic. << The source used – Dr Monici explains - is the system Multiwave Locked System (MLS), which combines the continuous and pulsed emission at 808 nm and 905 nm. Studying the effect of treatment MLS ® on the morphology and energy metabolism of C2C12 cells (myoblasts) previously exposed to conditions of microgravity a system by means of simulation, it was verified that the treatment was able to restore the levels of basal phosphatase activity, of counteract the alteration of the cytoskeleton and the increase of the activity of glycolytic enzymes occurring as a result of exposure to conditions of absence of load. In conclusion, the results provide interesting information for potential applications of infrared lasers in the treatment of problems associated with muscle hypotrophy >>.
