Blazeris®, the “blue blade” that evolves surgical practice in veterinary medicine

Designed to make surgical procedures safer and more effective, this laser device from ASAveterinary, a synthesis of precision, safety, and innovation, enables rapid interventions, optimises surgical outcomes, and minimises the need for postoperative medication. The exponential increase in the number of pets in Italian households, their integration into daily life, and the growing expectations regarding their longevity and quality of life have led to an ever-increasing demand for specialised veterinary services, services that rival human medicine in terms of accuracy and scope.
Blazeris® was created precisely to address the requirements of modern veterinary medicine. It serves as an essential response to the real-world needs of veterinary surgery, aiming to provide procedures that are more precise, less traumatic, and better tolerated by patients, while ensuring clinical outcomes that are increasingly predictable and long-lasting.
Suitable for use in both the operating room and outpatient settings, the Blazeris® surgical unit is the result of over forty years of experience by ASA in the fields of pre- and post-surgical care for both humans and animals. The Research & Development Division of the Vicenza-based company, which specialises in the production of therapies and devices for laser therapy and magnetotherapy, has designed and developed a laser instrument capable of making surgical procedures both safer and more effective.

“Blazeris® is not merely a surgical laser; it is a technology capable of making a real difference in the daily practice of veterinarians. It offers genuine added value compared to existing market solutions, all while maintaining portability and ease of use. The decision to focus on the blue wavelength, evaluated in collaboration with the R&D division of El. En., which possesses extensive experience in developing laser sources, was no coincidence. With a wavelength of approximately 450 nm, it is absorbed by haemoglobin more than 100 times more effectively than traditional infrared diodes, facilitating excellent haemostasis control. Furthermore, its versatility is a key asset: it can cut through even fibrotic or poorly vascularised tissues with high efficiency and precision, requiring relatively low power levels and offering superior control over carbonisation. It is precisely this combination of features that led to the concept of the Blazeris® “blue blade”, not just a laser source, but a true cutting instrument designed for veterinary surgery”, explains Silvia Vitulo, Product Manager in the R&D Department at ASA.

Practically speaking, the Blazeris® “blue blade” supports and enhances the surgeon’s manual skill in daily clinical challenges thanks to its precise light delivery, controlled power, and technological innovation. Its use enables faster procedures, optimised surgical outcomes, fewer post-operative complications, a reduced need for post-operative medication, and significantly improved compliance between the patient/owner.

Moreover, Blazeris® facilitates endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures, even in hard-to-reach areas—such as those encountered in dental, ear, and gynaecological disorders. This is confirmed by the direct experience of several professionals selected by ASAveterinary to test the surgical unit in their daily practice ahead of its general release. Their input helped validate its value and confirm the tangible results that can be achieved. Among them is Giovanni Ghibaudo, a Veterinarian who has specialised in veterinary dermatology and otology for 30 years, who used Blazeris® for 8 months to remove benign cutaneous growths and treat ear conditions in dogs and cats.

“I was able to test Blazeris® in a particularly demanding setting: the ear and the ear canal, specifically under the guidance of an otoscope. Its use did not require any changes to the procedures traditionally followed when performing laser-assisted endoscopic surgery; however, for those already experienced in using diode lasers on skin or other organs, a brief period of practice is needed to develop the manual dexterity required for proper positioning. Furthermore, the device is extremely easy to handle, and setting the desired parameters for a specific procedure is straightforward”.

Its advantages also extend to operational efficiency.

“In cases of feline cystadenomatosis, there are often a great many cysts that need to be opened and vaporised. Thanks to the speed of the laser’s action and to the precision provided by the fibre, Blazeris® allowed me to shorten procedure times. The excision, or debulking of ductal nodules was also very smooth, rapid, and effective”.

Following previews presented in the first half of the year at major national and international events—including SCIVAC in Rimini and the ECVS meeting in Liverpool, Blazeris® continues its international rollout. In the fourth quarter, it will be featured at several stops across the Nordic countries, culminating in an appearance at the London Vet Show on 19th and 20th November.

The focus is already shifting toward 2027 and the ECVS Annual Scientific Meeting, which will take place in Italy—specifically in Florence—next July. It will be an opportunity for those who use the device to share their first-hand experience, discussing its features, applications, and unique aspects within veterinary surgical practice.
