Gabriele Sinigaglia: the Biomedical Engineer who dreams of Australia and engages with AI

The trip to Australia is only postponed. Gabriele Sinigaglia, AI Engineer at ASA, wanted to gain post-graduate experience in the land of kangaroos, but “life turned out differently,” leading him to put his flight to Canberra on hold, at least for now. A “sliding doors” situation that landed him permanently at ASA, after completing here an internship related to his university studies.

What did you choose to study, Gabriele?
I completed a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering and a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence, with the aim of applying it specifically in the biomedical field. I liked the idea that such a powerful and transversal technological tool could also make a concrete contribution to people's well-being.

ASA, which focuses on promoting the recovery of personal well-being, could only be the best choice for your internship…
I thought so too! That's why I asked a friend of mine, whose father worked at ASA, to be my introduction to see if the company would be interested in giving me this opportunity.

They did show interest. You joined the company and what did you do?
The project I was involved in specifically concerned artificial intelligence, as the company wanted to include a postural assessment phase before treatment. This commitment was very stimulating, allowing me to offer my skills to the company.

How would you rate your internship at ASA?
Undoubtedly useful and, above all, effective, not only because it allowed me to work on a project that interested me and suited my skills, but also because the company was always very attentive towards supporting me. In the later stages, since I didn't graduate immediately, they were also very generous in allowing me to study at the end of the day while staying on site.

After completing your internship, you asked to continue your professional career within the company…
Yes. I graduated while already working at ASA. The decision to stay with the company arose for several reasons, primarily the opportunity to continue working on initiatives that would enhance my skills. The human factor, especially my colleagues and the corporate climate, also tipped the scales in this direction.

Now that some time has elapsed since you joined, would you still ask the company to stay?
Today though it would be a more informed choice, having gained some experience in the field. I would ask the company again to place their trust in me because over the years, I have had the opportunity to work in a positive environment. Not only have the people proven to be very collaborative, but ASA itself has allowed me to structure my work in a “calibrated” manner, enabling me to manage my activity very independently. Being able to offer improvement measures and having the space and opportunity to implement them is also one of the aspects that motivates me. Last but not least, ASA has also allowed me to gain financial independence, which has been useful for pursuing other personal projects.

These are ASA's contributions to Gabriele's life. On the other hand, what did your arrival bring to the company?
A more modern vision and, perhaps, a more effective method for addressing specific problems, thanks also to the support of innovative tools. ASA is undergoing change, and the strategies it adopts must also adapt to new visions.

How does Gabriele envision his future?
At the moment, I’m struggling to do so. I'm taking it one step at a time, trying to truly focus on what interests me and what, at the same time, can be useful to the company and the people I work with. However, I'm certain that I'd like programming to be only a secondary part of my work. By nature, I always need to understand not only the “why” I'm called on to develop a project, but also the need that drives it and, above all, its objective.

And what does he dream of?
During my studies, I had a romantic vision of the world of work, dreaming of being able to leave a mark with my work. Today, this vision is more realistic…

Perhaps a pit stop in Australia could help you reconnect with it?
