Gonalgia

Gonalgia | Self-healing

In general, if a trauma occurred it is recommended to apply the 5 rules summarized in the acronym PRICE: protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation.

Gonalgia

Gonalgia | Prevention

It is not always possible to prevent gonalgia. Anyway some advices may be useful.

It is important to lose weight if being weighty so joints are less loaded and the risk of arthrosis is reduced, as well as of tendinous and ligamentous lesions.

Moreover motor re-education is useful to reinforce the knee muscles.

It is important to choose a physical activity that adapts to the knees: i.e. it is better to quit sports activities which may cause repeated knees traumas and start swimming.

Gonalgia

Gonalgia | Therapy

In case ache comes after a trauma it will be necessary to immediately protect and immobilize the knee, to apply ice, to compress it and elevate the limb (see advices/self treatment). In order to ease the pain, the doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory/pain – relieving medicines.

Sometimes cortisone infiltration directly done in the knee may be suggested, with the aim of reducing the inflammation.

A central role in treating the different pathologies of the knee which are responsible of gonalgia, is played by physical treatment.

Gonalgia

Gonalgia | Diagnosis

Distortive traumas and related joints and menisci lesions are caused because the force applied to move the joint is stronger than the normal one.

The patella tendinitis is a functional overloading pathology due to an excessive stress of the tendon by sportsmen who perform athletic movements responsible of continuously stressing this structure.

The prerotulian bursitis occurs when doing activities that require being kneeled for long, i.e. gardeners or tilers.

Gonalgia | Symptoms

Gonalgia, or knee pain, it is a common problem, responsible of several medical examinations.

It is a symptom that can be provoked by many different causes: it can occur in a young person hurting after a distortive trauma (with related joints or menisci lesions), in an elderly person suffering of knee arthrosis, in an athlete with an inflamed rotular tendon (jumper knee), in a teenager  feeling pain at the tibial apophysis (Osgood - Schlatter disease).
