The treatment of chronic back pain. Comparison between HILT and Back School
A clinical trial comparing the outcomes of chronic back pain treatment with back school and HILT respectively, was performed by Dr. Pierguido Conte, SS. Annunziata Hospital, Taranto. Chronic back pain is a widespread pathology ( 80% of the people was or is affected by back pain) and can induce pain and disability. The aim of the treatment is pain resolution and recovering the autonomy as much as possible. Chronic back pain treatment provides for back school, drugs, instrumental physical therapies, psychological therapies, lifestyle, surgery. 14 female patients, 35 - 60 years old, affected by atypical chronic back pain participated in this study. Patients have been divided in two homogeneous groups: the first group has been treated only with back school exercises while the second has been treated firstly with exercises and then with HILT. The evaluation of the outcomes obtained in the two different groups has been performed in single-blind, using VAS scale and Oswestry modified scale. Both groups showed an improvement in term of pain control and disability. Nevertheless the improvement was more evident in the group exposed to combined therapies (back school+HILT).
